Washington,
July 25, 2024
Congressman Mike Garcia (CA-27) released the following statement after the House unanimously passed H. Res. 1367, establishing the bipartisan Task Force on the Attempted Assassination of Donald Trump. “This is an important, bipartisan step toward accountability,” said Rep. Garcia. “The security failures at Former President Trump’s rally were egregious, and I was glad to see Secret Service Director Cheatle recognize the inevitable and resign. It’s clear that new leadership is needed to restore the agency’s credibility and competence. “Now, it’s the duty of Congress to discover what went wrong, why it went wrong, and report those facts to the American people. I look forward to this task force doing so in a bipartisan manner.” Background on the Task Force: The Task Force will be empowered with all investigative authority of the House of Representatives, including subpoena authority. The goal of the Task Force will be threefold:
The Task Force will make recommendations for reform to the relevant government agencies and recommend any necessary legislation to implement the reforms. This bipartisan Task Force will be comprised of seven Republicans and six Democrats. |
