Mike Garcia Co-sponsors Bill to Increase Public Safety, Support Law Enforcement

Representative Mike Garcia (CA-25) released the following statement on being an original co-sponsor to the Public Safety Enhancement Act of 2021, H.R. 6132, which would provide grant funding to hire an additional 100,000 police officers within the next five years.
Representative Mike Garcia (CA-25) released the following statement on being an original co-sponsor to the Public Safety Enhancement Act of 2021, H.R. 6132, which would provide grant funding to hire an additional 100,000 police officers within the next five years. The legislation, introduced by Representative Troy Nehls (TX-22), reauthorizes a portion of then-Senator Joe Biden’s 1994 crime bill used to combat the surge in crime by putting more officers on the streets.

“In Los Angeles County and across California, we have seen firsthand what happens when we defund our police departments and reduce the consequences for committing crimes. From mass organized crime to illegal marijuana grows ravaging our communities, we need to support our law enforcement and provide them with the tools and funding they need to be successful. I am proud to co-sponsor this commonsense legislation to get more police officers on our streets and increase public safety in our communities,” said Garcia.

Last week, $40,000 in merchandise was stolen in a smash and grab robbery in Santa Clarita, CA. The overall murder rate in the U.S. increased by nearly 30% in 2020, the largest increase in over a century. LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva recently stated that in LA County there has been a 60% increase in homicides in 2021 compared to 2020. This bill would attempt to address the recent crime surge occurring in California’s 25th District and in communities across America.
