Mike Garcia Addresses California’s Rising Crime, Root Causes Behind It

Appeared on Fox Business’s Evening Edit with Liz McDonald

Representative Mike Garcia (CA-25) joined Fox Business’s Evening Edit with Liz McDonald to discuss how California’s failed policies and weak leadership have led to the “perfect storm” for mass crime in California.

In the last two weeks, California has seen several heinous crimes make the national headlines, including: the killing of an off-duty LAPD officer, several Union Pacific train cars being robbed resulting in the derailment of train cars due to the debris, and most recently—the death of UCLA graduate student, Brianna Kupfer, who was stabbed to death while working in Los Angeles.

Garcia warned that what is occurring in California should serve as a warning to the rest of the nation.

“If you don’t live in California, you need to be paying attention right now because this is not a California problem— these are policies that are actually being adopted and uploaded to our federal government,” said Garcia. “What’s going on in California is the result of decades of bad policies that have led to a perfect storm that favors these criminals.”

He explained that the suspected killer of Brianna Kupfer, Shawn Smith, is one example of where weak California leadership and progressive policies have let Californians down.

“We had a suspect who had a prior history of arrests where he would have been charged with a felony in the past, but because of a bill called Prop. 47 in California, that charge was downgraded to a misdemeanor. He [Shawn Smith] was let out, and ultimately killed an innocent young lady who was simply doing her job,” said Garcia.

Garcia, who recently called for Los Angeles District Attorney George Gascon to resign, stated that modern day California is reflecting life in the 1800’s.

“It’s like the 1800’s in California, right now. We have trains derailing because of all the trash on the rails, we have trains being robbed, people being killed in the streets, and people not being held accountable for their crimes,” said Garcia. “This is while Newsom is blaming the prosecutors, and the prosecutors are just passing the buck.”

Garcia stated that failed Democratic leadership is opening the eyes of the American people, reaching beyond party lines.

“It starts with the President of the United States, within Congress, our governors in California and in other states with these very progressive liberal policies on crime,” said Garcia. “It doesn’t matter if you’re Democrat or Republican, you just want your neighborhood to be secure. That is what people are realizing— the Dems have failed us in this regard.”
