Mike Garcia Discusses Supply Chain Crisis on Fox Business

Representative Mike Garcia joined Varney & Co. on Fox Business to discuss the growing supply chain crisis and how California’s failed policies have contributed to the backlog of containers in the Ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach.

Garcia started by highlighting how California’s failed policies, such as AB 5, have majorly contributed to the supply chain crisis due to the shortage of truck drivers to move the containers, creating a major backlog in the ports.

“The source of this problem for the truckers goes back to a bill called AB 5, which prevents truckers from operating as independent contractors,” said Garcia on Varney & Co. “And another policy called CARB, which is the leading edge of the Green New Deal. What [AB 5] effectively does is force truckers to leave California because they cannot operate as independent contractors.”

He also discussed the impact California’s policies have on the entire nation.

“I love my state - it’s a beautiful state, great people, great weather, great geography. But from an economic perspective, it is a wobbly top that is like two revaluations from falling down… [AB 5] is an example of how California’s policies affect the entire nation. We need to pay attention,” said Garcia on Varney & Co.

Garcia also touched on the recently proposed fines for cargo ships still stuck in the ports.

“They should be cutting costs and incentivizing people to get out of their lower port fees and quicker turnaround times. That’s how we are going to get this thing moving. In California, they need to allow truckers to operate as independent contractors, repeal AB 5, and start to relax the guidelines around carbon emissions, and allow truckers to continue to use their trucks,” said Garcia on Varney & Co. “We do those things, and we will have enough truckers on the ground to move these containers and we will solve this problem in a matter of weeks.”
