Mike Garcia Co-Sponsors Bipartisan Bill to Support Veterans Battling PTSD & TBI

Representative Mike Garcia (CA-25) co-sponsored the bipartisan PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Peer Support Program Act, which would establish a peer-to-peer support program, or Dwyer Program, for veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). The peer-to-peer model provides a safe, confidential, and educational platform where all veterans are welcome to meet with other veterans in support of each other’s transition to post-service life. “It is abundantly clear that there is a dire need to improve the access to critical mental health resources for our veterans battling Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). I know many veterans who have PTSD or TBI because of their service in the military and I’ve lost too many friends - and many of them to suicide because they thought they were able to compartmentalize when in reality they needed the help. I firmly believe this legislation is needed now more than ever,” said Rep. Garcia. This week, Garcia spoke on the House Floor in support of this legislation and the need to raise awareness for veterans battling PTSD and TBI. “The mental toughness taught in the military does not mean staying silent and not reaching out for help. Instead, I believe that receiving help and talking with a professional or a fellow veteran shows resilience…that’s what real toughness looks like,” said Rep. Garcia on the House Floor. This bill is named after PFC Joseph Dwyer, an Iraq War veteran who lost his battle with PTSD. Click here to watch Rep. Garcia’s remarks on the House Floor. Read more here from Rep.
