Representative Mike Garcia (CA-25) released the following statement after he cosponsored a resolution opposing the engagement of Russia in ongoing discussions surrounding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the removal of sanctions on Iran, and the restoration of the JCPOA agreement while Iran continues undeclared nuclear activities.
This resolution comes as Russia continues to commit violent atrocities against the people of Ukraine, and highlights that including Russia in additional JCPOA discussions will only embolden them. “It is imperative that the U.S. does not reenter the failed JCPOA, which would help Iran and Russia and hurt America,” said Garcia. “President Biden is not only looking to reenter this disastrous deal with Iran, but the negotiations are being mediated by Russia while Russia is reprehensibly waging a war against Ukraine. That is why I co-sponsored this resolution opposing the involvement of Russia in further JCPOA discussions, the removal of sanctions on Iran, and the restoration of any JCPOA agreement while Iran continues to develop their nuclear capabilities in the dark. America must stand up and once again demand the same ‘Peace Through Strength’ approach that President Reagan did.” Last week, Garcia cosponsored the Restoring Maximum Pressure on Iranian Terrorists Act to codify into law sanctions placed on top Iranian officials in 2019 under Executive Order 13876. The resolution is cosponsored by 57 lawmakers and is endorsed by former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo. Garcia is a former United States Naval Officer that flew in over 30 combat missions during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Click here to read the resolution. |
